If you go to lessons, it is a good thing in the way that you are taught to do all kinds of strokes, the proper way to dive, and how to float properly. Although I took lessons, I still can't float right as my body will begin to sink fast. You will also be taught how to revive someone should they drown. Going swimming should be fun and carefree, but this isn't always the case. Sometimes unforeseen problems could arise, like developing leg cramps or cuts on the bottoms of your feet that might be pretty bad.
If you don't know how to swim and you have children that do, you should still have someone with you just in case one of your children should need help if something went wrong. If you don't know how and this situation was to come up, not only could you lose this child but you could also lose your life as well. Not only would two lives be lost for unneeded reasons but the rest of the children still in the water would be on their own with no way to maybe get home.
Learning to swim is just something everyone should take the time to learn. As long as you can save yourself, you should be able to enjoy going to the beach to take a dip. You and the whole family might one day just want to go to the beach and make a day of it. This could be by going fishing, camping or boating. If one person can't swim, it can cause a damper on the whole idea of a family outing. One or more family members might feel obligated to stay behind if they wanted to swim, snorkel, or scuba dive in the water. If this one person ever has to go out on a boat, they would have to wear a life jacket. Everyone, in turn, would have to wear one so he would feel comfortable wearing a life jacket.
