There are some things that are really annoying in this world and I cannot imagine anything worse than itching related to a yeast infection. Whether it is female, male or baby yeast infections caused from candida (bacterial over growth), they are all annoying. You know what I mean - the kind of itching that will not stop and you scratch until swelling and bleeding occur. It is pure insanity BUT there is reason for good news: You can get rid of a yeast infection in a matter of 24 hours or less.
Up to 75% of women will experience a yeast infection at some point. For some women it can be as frequent as several times a year. Vaginal yeast infections are often called 'Thrush'.
The most common form of vaginal yeast infection is caused by the fungus Candida albicans. It is quite natural to have this fungus present in the vagina but it is normally kept in check by the acidity of the vagina and 'good' bacteria that live there. If something changes the natural balance of things the fungus will increase in numbers and that is what causes the discomfort.
Genital candidiasis symptoms are similar to other diseases that can afflict the genital area. To make an absolute diagnosis of yeast infection requires that a swab be taken from the affected area and sent to a lab for testing.
The traditional way to treat yeast infections is antifungal drugs either applied topically, ingested, or if the problem is vaginal, as a suppository. These drugs usually have an 80-90% cure rate. What about the other 10- 20 %? This is where the danger of misdiagnosis comes in. There is the danger that similar to drug resistant bacteria; fungal infections that do not respond to treatments are becoming more common. HIV-infected women who receive long term antifungal therapy are particularly at risk of developing resistant strains of Candida. The effectiveness of these treatments can be lessened if they are used frequently and/or for a prolonged period.
