The most important thing you need if you want to rank anywhere near the top of the search engines is backlinks from other websites. The major search engines see these links as positive votes for your site so the more of these links you have, the higher you will rank. Of course it's a little more complex than that but this is one of the basic rules of SEO.
Ideally you should look to obtain the best quality links you possibly can and preferably one-way links as these are much more valuable than reciprocal links, which are no longer very effective for SEO purposes. The links you do obtain should contain your main keywords in the actual link text and should be dofollow links so they are actually recognized and credited by the search engines.
Other than buying links, which is quite risky because your website may be penalized if you do this, there are many straight-forward ways you can build links to your site. For a start you can submit your website to several of the online directories which are out there. There are both free and paid directories available but you should always check that your link appears on a page that is actually indexed and ideally one that passes some PageRank.
Other ways of getting one-way links include article submission where you write and submit articles to various different article directories online. By leaving a couple of links to your site in the resource box you will soon start building up links from all over the internet if your articles are good quality and get picked up or syndicated by other websites.
You can also build links by leaving comments on other people's blogs. Most of these blogs have nofollow comments sections but there are still some blogs that provide dofollow links, which are obviously a lot more beneficial from an SEO point of view.
The final point I want to make though, which is also the second crucial element of SEO, is that no matter how many links you build to your sites, you have to create and maintain good quality content on your websites. You can have all the backlinks and search engine rankings that you want, but if your website is poor then most people will quickly leave your site.
If, however, you create top quality content then not only will people be more inclined to read what you have to say and possibly buy your products or click on your affiliate links, but they will also recommend you to other people. As a result of this you will see increased traffic and maybe even higher rankings if people link to your website on social bookmarking and networking sites and forums.
So the point I want to get across in this article is that if you want to obtain high search engine rankings, then you need plenty of good quality backlinks and lots of good quality content as well to make your site stand out from all of the others.
