When it comes to losing weight and keeping it off for good, no celebrity has been more public with her struggle than Oprah Winfrey. For over 20 years we’ve watched in fascination as she has triumphed and failed in her private battle to maintain a healthy weight.

It’s hard to imagine what it feels like to have unflattering pictures of yourself splattered across numerous tabloid magazines with screaming headlines about how fat you are. I’m sure Oprah has felt hurt and humiliation many times when she’s been treated like a circus freak for public consumption. In reality, she’s a good woman who struggles with her weight because of deep seated issues.

Oprah is not only the Queen of Talk, she’s also the queen of trying different ways of losing weight. She admits herself that over the years her quiet desperation has driven her to try just about everything including: fad diets, fat camps, running marathons and even private chefs. We’ve cheered for her when she successfully drops big pounds and feel sorry for her when we watch those pounds slowly creep back on.

This is the common experience of millions of people struggling to lose unwanted pounds every single day. Perhaps you’ve experienced the ups and downs of losing weight yourself. Maybe you are one of the many people who have followed Oprah’s weight battles with interest because if she can beat it, then that gives you hope that you can too.

A couple of years ago, Oprah seemed like she had finally gotten the better of her yo-yo dieting and discovered how to keep a healthy weight by following a good diet and nutrition program. She proudly showed off her new look on dozens of magazine covers. Viewers of her show noticed how confident and radiant she looked.

Recently, Oprah admitted that she has become ashamed to show her body from the waist down on her magazine cover. She also said that when she had her friends Tina Turner and Cher on her show for a special episode, she felt fat and unattractive next to them.

Being ashamed of how you look and feel about yourself is very common when you’re overweight. Let’s face it, society often puts skinny people on a pedestal.
Sometimes this is taken to an extreme. Being too thin isn’t normal either, but at least they aren’t ignored or ridiculed like overweight people. This makes losing weight even harder. The more someone feels ashamed, the more likely they are to overeat.

Instead of ignoring the problem, Oprah, like the trouper she is, is making her most recent weight battle public. She is starting over again – this time with a brand new outlook. Living your best life. This means, lose weight in order to feel healthy and good about yourself, not to get skinny.

I think this is the right approach. We’re so obsessed with losing a certain amount of weight and looking like cookie cutter versions of this model or that celebrity, when in fact, those people aren’t even thin enough for the magazine covers. Latest example: Jessica Alba, who is a healthy, normal weight, was airbrushed to look like she weighs 90 pounds. This is simply ridiculous.

Starving yourself to get to 120 when you really look great at 145 is not wise or healthy for you in the long run. So now it’s time to be honest with yourself like Oprah is being honest with herself - and the world.

Look at yourself in the mirror and decide right now that you are no longer going to subject yourself to the whims of the diet world. You are a worthwhile human being who wants to live your best life. You can’t do that when you’re constantly obsessed with your weight.

Decide right now that you are going to be losing weight quickly and safely within reason. No more fad diets. No more stopping and starting diets. You are going to finally face reality about yourself and realize that you only need to lose enough weight to go about your day feeling good and with lots of energy to do the things you enjoy.

Just like Oprah, you’re okay with being YOU.
