The colour of your clothing when on safari is important. Think of natural colours that blend in with your surroundings; pale greens, browns, greys and khaki coloured clothing is perfect. You might think that camouflage clothing would work best on safari, but this can be seen as offensive in many African countries, so stick to neutral colours.

White clothes wouldn't stand out too much, but would quickly get dirty on the dusty roads. Black is too hot in the summer, and black and dark blue clothing is known to attract tsetse flies, which is an insect with a painful bite.

Outdoor and camping shops often sell clothing made from new materials which repel water or are breathable. There is nothing wrong with any of these clothes, but consider their volume. It is common place for these new manmade materials to make a lot of noise when you move. This can be irritating, but can also warn off the smaller animals, making seeing wildlife that much more difficult. Cotton is commonly known as the best material for safari, and professional safari guide uniforms are always made from cotton.

A safari jacket is one essential piece of equipment. Even if you're planning on taking a trip to Africa in the summer, you will end up going out before sunrise in the back of an open-air safari vehicle, so it's important to be able to keep warm.

Cotton jackets are best, although jackets made from other materials are ok, as long as they don't make too much noise when you are moving around. Make sure it has plenty of pockets - handy for storing pocket guides to African birds or a pair of binoculars.

For shirts, go long sleeved. They can easily be rolled up, but can provide warmth and protection from the harsh African sun. Long sleeves can also help protect you from mosquitoes. A shirt with a collar will help protect your neck from the sun also.

Trousers are better than shorts for safari, since they protect your legs from the sun, scratches from bushes and mosquitoes. If you are going to wear shorts, make them knee length, and wear long socks if possible.

A hat can be good to take on safari. It will help keep the sun out of your eyes, and save it from burning your skin. Even in wintertime with sun screen, you can still burn. Getting that glare out of your eyes will also help you spot wildlife. This is especially important, since you will see the most animals in the early morning or late afternoon, when the sun is low and the animals are at their most active.
