Like many bosses you've encountered earlier, Grand Magus Telestra will clone herself throughout the fight. To succeed against her, players must know the kill order for the clones. Also, group heals are very handy for this encounter as she uses AOE spells quite a bit.
There are three phases you must complete in order to defeat Grand Magus Telestra. Each phase is described below along with a few suggestions for each.
Phase 1
When you engage her during phase 1, she will cast three different spells: Firebomb, Ice Nova, and Gravity Well.
Firebomb will inflict roughly eight hundred (800) points of damage to the primary target and anyone in close proximity.
Ice Nova deals around twenty-five hundred (2,500) points of damage to anyone within 60 yards (the whole party).
And Gravity Well pulls all party members closer to her. In addition to pulling party members closer to her, Gravity Well deals shadow damage over time.
You can basically nuke her during Phase 1. But once she reaches 50% health, she will begin the next phase. It's important that your party try to clump together before she clones herself as this will make it easier for your tank to grab initial aggro on all three of her Mage clones.
Phase 2
At the onset of Phase 2, Grand Magus Telestra will create three clones of herself; one from each of the Mage Trees.
The Frost clone will cast Ice Barb and Blizzard.
The Fire clone will cast Fire Blast and Scorch.
The Arcane clone will cast Time Stop and Critter (similar to polymorph).
The clones can be polymorphed and it's usually a good idea to keep the Arcane clone out of action until Frost and Fire are dead.
If you don't have a mage, try to kill the Arcane first to avoid having one of the party polymorphed. Ideal kill order: Arcane, Frost, and then Fire. Some groups prefer to kill the Frost clone first because of the AOE damage, but the kill order really depends upon your party makeup. And typical with most bosses, they cannot be Mind Controlled, so don't bother trying!
Also, before she splits, remind your party that it's a good idea to have the DPS and healers gather together. This will make it easier for your tank to grab aggro on all three the moment she clones herself.
Phase 3
Once the clones are destroyed, she will reappear with 50% health. She will use the same abilities as she did during Phase 1. When you get her down to 25% health, she will Freeze everyone and cast Fireball Volley. If you take too long to kill her in Phase 3, she will eventually clone herself again.
Although it's ideal to kill either Arcane or Frost first, remind your tank that it's more important to get aggro on anything in front of him or her the moment she clones herself. If your tank is not quick enough, someone in the party will likely end up dead and that means you're going to wipe. She is especially quick during Heroic mode, so your tank needs to be ready for the clones!
