This is How it All Began:
The necktie was originally worn by soldiers and nobles. This often provided protection from the elements and indicated position in the ranks of society. The tradition of the necktie began as early as the third century. During this time the tie was similar to a scarf in both appearance and use. Rank in service or society could be identified by ones necktie, because the higher you ranked the more impressive your tie. It was not unusual for men of old to be as much if not more fashionably correct than the women. It was considered a fun challenge to be the best dressed and women often copied mens styles in order to be recognized as prominent members of society. As this form of necktie became popular with women the more modern version of the mens tie was created for distinction.
Fast Forward to Today:
Today the necktie has many uses. They are associated with power still but are also available in styles that are not so formal. Choosing an appropriate tie can boost your appearance, but do not choose the wrong necktie for your event. Neckties are sold in many styles including power ties, suave ties, holiday themed neckties and ties with various characters and other themes.
For business and formal events always go with a power tie. These ties will be noticeable but will not overpower your other clothing and accessories. Do not use neckties with loud prints or humorous ties of any kind. These are distractions from the task at hand and do not speak well of you. A solid color tie works well for business and formal use also. When choosing a solid color necktie make sure it will blend with your clothing and if you are part of a wedding party make sure you speak with the bride about your choice as it is traditional for all members of a wedding party to match.
In less formal settings it is acceptable to wear comedic or themed ties. For example, if you child bought you a holiday themed necktie for Christmas you may want to wear it to Christmas dinner but not to your office Christmas party. Likewise, it is acceptable to wear humorous ties and character ties when out to dinner with friends but should be avoided in more somber situations.
The proper necktie can truly make or break your reputation. By purchasing ties at mens specialty stores you can ensure the right look for your affair. Remember that today as in times past the necktie you wear will represent your personality and status. So do not embarrass yourself. Use the simple rules above to choose and purchase the right tie. This will allow you to have the perfect tie for any occasion and still show originality and impeccable style.
