The site instantly picked up popularity and grew to massive amounts soon after its launch. Then in October 2006 Google Inc announced that it has purchased YouTube in return of $1.65 billion in Google stock. The site has continued to grow but it has also had its downsides due to copyright infringement claims.
But YouTube could now be developing in to a new generation, the site is in talks with several TV content providers which include ITV and Channel 4 to stream actual TV shows, it could ultimately lead into a huge shift on how people watch TV. Could you imagine watching your popular show such as Britain's Got Talent live on YouTube and your favourite drama or soap series?
The same sort of thing has already been done by Hulu in the American market, it has been rumoured that they have also been in negotiations with UK networks to dominate the sector. So YouTube need to react quite quickly to capture a place in the market, they have already had a dispute with music suppliers and have therefore not been allowed to display any material in the UK.
There is a huge amount of different companies and video niche websites being created on a daily basis, so YouTube simply need to stay innovative to the industry, if another video site comes a long and does something different then they are going to take YouTube's thunder. I mean Google own the company as well so its not like they haven't got the funds in place to push things more than other companies could.
I mean if YouTube did get the licence then it would be amazing for them, I mean I for one would visit the site a lot more regularly to catch up with shows or programmes that I may have missed and the same can be said for a lot of people.
