Here are some tips to not only help you find the right photographer, but to end up with an amazing finished product.
-Selecting a Professional Photographer - Make sure to choose a professional photographer for your headshots. There are plenty of ads on Craigslist and in the classifieds that advertise free headshots by amateur photographers who are looking to expand their portfolios. While these may sound like tempting offers, the finished product usually isn't worth the price of gas it took you to get there. Plus, young actresses need to exercise caution when responding to any of these ads. Many times, these so called ads for photographers are actually lures for criminals to attract young women.
-Ask For Samples - When it comes to selecting a photographer, be sure to ask for samples of work that they have done for other actors. Never simply blindly select a photographer before really getting an idea of his or her style of work. You may be competing with hundred of other actors when pursuing a role or going on an audition; thus, it is crucial that your headshots really stand out. Select photographers whose samples really catch your eye, without being overly flashy.
-Familiarize Yourself With Industry Standards - It is imperative that you familiarize yourself with the current industry standards. While the standard size of headshots is still 8X11, the trend in the industry has moved from black and white to color. Or, specifically, high-resolution color. Furthermore, it used to be common for actors to order hundreds of copies right off the bat. Today, this is pretty unnecessary, since more and more headshot submissions are done online prior to an audition. Luckily, there are more outlets available to actors to have their headshots printed locally. Gone are the days where headshots had to be ordered online by the hundreds.
As you can see, obtaining fantastic actor's headshots are as simple as finding the right photographer, and knowing exactly what you want. Now, go find some auditions!
