Affiliate marketing programs offer a great opportunity to merchants and marketers alike. Both partners must understand their niche. A niche is simply an area in which you have some expertise. In affiliate marketing this is seen as finding an untapped market.

Finding the right niche calls for research on a variety of topics. The Internet is a very busy place, but strangely enough, not all niches are covered. For example, if you sell paper, you may not do well selling plain white paper. Consider selling something more specific like pre-designed certificate paper.

Selling to niche markets prevents stretching yourself thin trying to serve everyone. Look for needs that are not being met. Once you find them try and find the products and services to fill those needs.

Helping Customers to Find You

Once you have settled on a product that suits your niche, it is time to help buyers find you. A successful marketing plan must include e-mail newsletters, article marketing, banners and text ads. You may add other forms of marketing to your strategy at any time. Allow room for your marketing strategy to evolve.

Advertising is the way to get customers to find your website. Being creative is the main requirement in advertisements when promoting affiliate marketing. The main avenues of advertisement online are:

Banner Ads

These are the general types of ads seen on web pages. They have clickable links to another website with information on the product being advertised. This type of ad leads to what is called "click through ratio". Websites that have a high click through ratio tend to be good for affiliate marketing services.

Pop-ups

While not the most popular type of ads to web users, they can be quite effective if creative and attractive. They work by actually having the ad pop up when a user opens a web site. Because of their lack of popularity they are not often used in affiliate marketing. The effectiveness of a pop-up ad is also undermined as many computers now have "popup blockers" which stop them from showing at all.

E-mails

Affiliate marketing using e-mail is a great way to get a link in front of potential customers. Unfortunately it often results in people considering any form of e-mail advertising "junk mail" even if they opted into the newsletter. E-mail marketing materials must never be sent to people who do not opt to receive it.

Contextual Advertising

Contextual advertising consists of targeted ads that display advertisements based on the keywords a website user keyed in. The ads that appear on the page are generally related to what the browser (website user) is actually reading at that point in time. Contextual ads have been proven to provide better conversion rates than some other types of advertising.

This type of advertisement is good for affiliate marketers because they are much more likely to be clicked on than generic ads. The reason for this is if someone is reading about motorbikes, the ads displayed will likely be about motorbikes. Contextual ads help pinpoint a merchant's target audience.

Many proponents of affiliate marketing will tell you that once you find your niche it becomes easier to make money online. This is only possible if you constantly evaluate and make the changes necessary as the market changes. Finding a successful area and sticking to it as is will not guarantee continuous success.
