Collect the following for the day of the interview:
Several copies of your resume and cover letter.
Have several copies listing your references who you have contacted so they know you are using them for contacts and references.
Any references from prior employers including any references.
A folder to take the paperwork with you to the interview.
A pad of paper to take notes and a nice pen.
Business references with the names of the contacts, business addresses, and phone numbers.
College transcripts.
Prepare yourself for the interview and be prepared to ask the following questions:
1. Why is this job available?
2. What are the characteristics you are seeking in an employee?
3. What are the duties of this position?
4. Can you tell me what the important aspects of this job?
5. Does one aspect have more importance than another does?
6. What are the other employees in the department in correlation to this position?
7. What is the reporting structure with the management and the employee in this company?
8. What is your policy regarding promotions within the company?
9. What other positions exist or are planned that will interact with this position?
10. How are employee performances measures?
11. How often are employees evaluated?
12. Are there company or department meetings?
13. What are the frequencies of these meeting?
When it comes time for the interview, arrive ten to fifteen minutes early.
Visit the bathroom to check your appearance. Make sure you do not have any stains on your clothing.
When meeting the person conducting the interview, greet them by their last name. Shake their hand and introduce yourself.
It is a good practice to listen during the interview. Take notes during the interview and make a note regarding possible questions to ask once the interviewer has asked if you have any questions. Be prepared to ask the appropriate questions. Write the responses the questions on the notepad.
Allow the interviewer to ask their questions. Respond the answers in a professional and polite manner. Be positive with your attitude. Avoid being negative about anything including your prior employment, bosses, and coworkers.
Ask any questions you may have.
Allow the interviewer to close the interview.
Thank them for taking the time to talk to you about the position.
When you get home, send a brief thank you note to the interviewer thanking them once again for taking the time to talk to you.
You will make a good impression on the interviewer if you remain positive and easy going while maintaining a professional attitude through the interview and the exit process.
