Many prospective or "newbie" website entrepreneurs make the mistake of assuming that the hard work is done once they've gotten their site up-and-running and published out on the Web. Realistically, though, the work is just beginning. This is because a concerted and intelligent series of marketing actions is going to need to take place to increase that new site's "visibility."
This "visibility, " as it relates to websites, simply means that the site has become interesting to not only people out there looking for information on, say, foreign exchange trading services but also the major search engines, which is where the real action is, so to speak. After all, traffic equals income. Now, one way to help your site's visibility is by the cultivation of backlinks, which help point the way back to the site.
A backlink is nothing more than a link back to your site from another site. This link can take the form of a simple mention - with an embedded, behind-the-scenes line of code like your site's web address, or URL - in an article that's been submitted and published on an article directory, for example. It can also be a link back to your site from yet another site via that same anchor text in another article or in a mention on that other site about your own site.
There are several different kinds and classes of links out on the Internet, and the major search engines have certain criteria for judging the quality of those links for purposes of ranking your site on their pages. For a fact, a site that's able to get ranked on the first three pages of the engines has a much better chance of being seen by everybody than one that isn't, so backlink building needs to be a part of your plan for increasing your site's visibility. Remember, traffic equals income.
This visibility can be increased by working to ensure you have a number of one-way backlinks out at other sites and on the Internet in general. A one-way link is one that points back to your site but doesn't depend for its existence on a reciprocal link on your own site back to that other site. Search engines value quality backlinks highly, and tend to give a site with a number of them what they call "expert" status. If you can gain expert status for your own site, you're well on the way to success.
A good method for generating backlinks, as has been said is through the dissemination and publication of as many well-written and content-rich articles to as many article directories as possible. These directories exist on the Internet for the purposes of getting information, news and the like out to as many readers as possible. They also allow an article's author to place a resource box at the end of the article, which is where at least two quality backlinks can be placed.
Think about that: You write - or have commissioned to have written - 50 good, unique articles of high quality that'll be sent to 50 different article directories for submission. In the resource box, you've place 2 links to sites you own. You now have the possibility of 100 quality backlinks pointing the way to your sites, which search engines love because of the traffic they generate. Do this consistently, and you should soon see higher engine and page ranking and more traffic to your sites!
