During the time immediately following your breast augmentation surgery, you will be required to stay in the hospital's recovery room where you are regularly monitored prior to release. The time you will be required to spend in the hospital recovery room will vary, but mostly this does not take long as most patients spend their recovery comfortably at home.
Since an anesthetic is used during the surgery, you may feel disoriented or confused immediately after. You may also feel physically sore or suffer blurred vision and sleepiness following the procedure. The time required to purge the effects of anesthesia is different between patients. Some people tend to be overly emotional during such time; emotions can take on many forms, such as depression, annoyance, or happiness. Aside from emotional responses, you may also feel sick and nauseous. These are normal reactions to anesthesia.
During the first stage of recovery, you will feel very little pain as long as the anesthesia still remains. However, once it passes, you may feel some pain, which you can resolve by asking for pain medication. Aside from this natural feeling, however, you may also experience a wide variety of effects such as a cold feeling and shivering, which are often caused by medications. However, the cold feeling is obviously heightened by the placement of ice packs in your chest area (yes, you will be covered with ice!). These ice packs are required during the first 48 hours or even for a longer period of time following the surgery. To deal with the cold, you can ask nurses for warm blankets. You cannot do away with the ice packs since your breast area will be bruised and inflamed at first, and the ice packs help control this.
Your movements will also be very limited, with breast augmentation actually being one of the most invasive procedures in cosmetic surgery. Following the surgery, you will be asked to wear a special compression garment so that your breasts will be bound to your body. And even though you may be perfectly healthy, it is important that another person be there to drive you home after the surgery since you will be in no position to drive as you won't have full range of motion in your arms and your vision may be blurred.
In some cases, surgeons also place a drain in the incision made in your breast area. The drain is a tube made of plastic; this is inserted into the incision in your breast while the other end leads to a plastic bulb. This helps to drain the fluids from the surgical area and can prevent the build up of harmful pressure. Without such pressure, your recovery will be significantly faster. Drains, however, are not often used in regular cases, though they are important in cases where there was excessive bleeding while the surgery was going on.
Aside from that, you will need to monitor your temperature closely throughout your recovery period. Feverish temperature can indicate an onset of infection. But infection or no infection, your surgeon will give you antibiotics nonetheless. Also, pain is an expected effect of any surgery, so you will just have to manage it with the help of pain medications. It is important that all instructions of your surgeon regarding medications, rest, and movement be followed explicitly if you wish to have a full and speedy recovery.
