Cedar deck boxes are popular due to their durability and beauty but keeping the natural color and consistency of cedar requires a little bit of time and care. Weathered cedar is often seen as a classic and pleasing look but varnish or sealant can be applied to keep the cedar looking new. Varnishes and sealants are available at home improvement stores which are made especially for cedar which will protect the deck box from excess moisture from rain and fading from the sun. Cedar is also a porous type of wood so finishing the inside of the deck box may be required to prevent it from smelling like mothballs or dust after a long period of time.
Teak deck boxes are very beautifully made and can be a long-lasting addition to your outdoor or indoor furniture. Teak wood used to be used to make large ships, which makes it extremely durable and moisture resistant. The natural oils in teak which maintain the honey color will eventually dry out, allowing the teak to weather to a silver hue. Weathered teak is beautiful, but restoring weathered teak is also fairly easy and only requires a thorough washing and the application of teak oil. Oily substances or foods can stain teak deck boxes easily but there are special teak detergents which will fix it easily.
Wicker deck boxes are some of the most beautiful types of deck boxes but they are not the best option for outdoor use. Taking your wicker deck box indoors during rain or snow is highly recommended because wicker will crack and break due to too much moisture. Wicker deck boxes will need to be dusted and cleaned regularly and washed with detergent and water to prevent it from looking worn out too quickly as well. Sanding sharp pieces off of wicker may also be required if the deck box will be used as a seat.
Plastic deck boxes are a good option for those people who like easy care and easy cleaning. Plastic deck boxes usually only need to be cleaned with soap or detergent and water on a regular basis. Plastic deck boxes will also become scuffed and scratched quite a bit with heavy use, and a spray paint which matches the color of the plastic will work well for repairing them.
No matter what type of deck box you purchase, it is always recommended that these boxes are cleaned and organized on a regular basis depending on what you are putting inside. Tools, gardening equipment, and pool accessories may make your deck box acquire smells and mold inside if it is not cleaned every few months.
