Money is good. It provides a roof over your head and gives you the power to buy food to fill your stomach. Unfortunately, money can run very short after all the expenses are paid. After all the bills are taken care of, many don't see very much left over for savings and entertainment. If you evaluate your budget, you might see some unnecessary expenses, and your TV service could be one of them.

Paid TV service can be expensive. It might not cost a lot in the beginning or it might not seem like a big chunk when you are paying it every month, but it does add up. How would an extra $300 to $1200 per year sound to you? If you had saved up that money rather than pay for TV service, you could probably take a vacation somewhere nice. Unless you absolutely must have those specialty channels that are not available through over the air transmissions, then you can pretty much do without them.

Cable and satellite providers run specials on TV service all of the time. These specials can last from three months to as long as two years if you sign a contract. You might even get a low introductory rate of $100 for three services: TV, phone, and internet. It might seem good at first, but after that promotional period ends, you can expect a price increase that can range anywhere from 20% to as much as a full 100%.

Furthermore, you might be surprised to learn how many people actually use their cable or satellite channels to their full use. Because of busy work and school schedules and other priorities, committing to shows on these other channels can fall on the bottom of the priorities list. Only when there are no errands or activities to participate in that the specialty channels receive any attention.

In addition, having internet can prove to be very beneficial, and not for the obvious reasons. Many of the networks have websites themselves, and the majority of those network sites allow visitors to view full episodes of their favorite show's current season. Depending on the network and the show, all of the seasons are available for viewing. One of the reasons why some networks will only allow the current season to be streamed online for free is for DVD sale purposes. If all of the episodes from the previous seasons were available 24/7, then the sales of the DVDs would fall dramatically. Full length episodes can be viewed on most network station sites as well as third-party sites, such as Hulu.

Using a TV antenna will free up some money that you can put towards a savings account. That extra money can even be used to save up for a big trip or a big purchase. Using an antenna can be temporary or it can be long term, and it all depends on your finances and how comfortable you are with paying for your TV service every month.
