It is a recurring problem that has plagued all members of society for the past few centuries. This recurring problem is the battle against excess weight. It could be two measly pounds, a not-too-bad twenty pounds, or a staggering two hundred pounds. Most people, at one time or another, have wanted to lose some weight for a special event, such as a wedding or party, or because they just want to get into shape. Try as they might, however, millions of people fail to lose the weight and keep it off. What are some ways you can lose weight?

First and foremost, do not think of this as a diet. The word rings self deprivation, and it sounds very temporary. How many times have you heard someone say, "I'm trying out this diet for a week" or "I'm going on this all-you-can-eat ? Many times, I'm sure. What you need to do is acknowledge this new eating habit as your lifestyle and not as a diet. Changing your eating habits and thinking of it as a lifestyle has a more permanent, lifelong ring to it, doesn't it?

Take before and after photos. Keeping track of your weight on the scale is one thing, but actually seeing the results in pictures is another. You might not be able to tell that you have lost five pounds. You might not feel it, except for when your pants are not as tight as they were before. Seeing your body and comparing it to last week's photos, however, will show you what changes have occurred, and it will motivate you to keep on going.

Do you have a friend or relative that wants to lose the weight, too? How about working on this process together? Getting support from someone will help to keep you accountable and will give you the motivation to keep doing what you are doing. Although there are plenty of people who have lost weight on their own, there are plenty others who were not motivated enough and would have appreciated some kind of support. If you don't have anyone you can lose the weight with, consider joining a support group. Look on Craig's List, join a forum, or look out for groups in your area that might meet regularly. Joy in weight loss is great, but shared joy in weight loss is even better!

Keep your perspective. Don't think you will lose fifteen pounds in a single week like some of the contestants do on the hit TV show, The Biggest Loser. You are working in a completely different environment, and you should set realistic goals that are doable in a normal environment where you have to work, go to school, or take care of the family. If you aim too high and fail, then you will fall down hard, and it might be hard to pick yourself back up when you don't realize your goal.
