Many people have a misconception that to buy a great or excellent quality home theater system, you would need thousands upon thousands of dollars saved up so you can get the best-of-the-best and top of the line models. That simply is not true! Unless you plan on getting a permit to build an addition to your home, put in a flat screen that will fit the entire upper half of your wall to have a projector project images onto it, and put in custom-made seating, then yes, you, too, can afford an excellent set up with just a few hundreds to a few thousand dollars.

When you think of a home theater, it might conjure up images of fancy-shmanciness that people don't often need anyway. A home theater is simple: you will need a television, of course, something to place it on, a surround sound speaker system, and other peripherals that will play your movies or video games and give you access to quality HD programming.

You will, of course, also need a place to put your set up. The living room will do just fine. Who says that you have to have a spare bedroom, den, or family room to make a home theater work? Because the living room is the area that most people dwell in anyway, it is only reasonable to put your set up there. Easy access! So don't fret if you don't have extra room!

Whether you choose to go with a LCD or plasma television, you will be glad to know that they are currently being sold at their most inexpensive price. New technologies get old the minute they are made and the more companies carry these products, the more competitive the prices will become. Take, for example, Samsung's new LED televisions. A 46" LED with 1080p resolution runs anywhere from $2600 and upwards at the moment. It's new technology. In a matter of months, other companies will join the fray and you will see the prices drop.

For a great deal on televisions, check local ads in newspapers and community bulletins, check out sales online frequently, and subscribe to electronic retail store emails for specials. The biggest sales of the year occur during three-day holiday weekends, Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving), and the day after Christmas. The same holds true for speakers, receivers, Blu-Ray players, and video game consoles. Expect to find great deals on these items after or during holidays. If you don't want to wait during a holiday, then you're still in luck. A typical 46" LCD or plasma HDTV can usually be purchased for $900 to $1500, depending on the model and specifications.

Speaker and receiver sets should not cost you a few thousand dollars. In fact, you can obtain a high quality speaker system that many consumers and tech "gurus" agree is superior to the likes of Bose and other high-priced sets. Brands like Onkyo, Energy, and Fluance offer solid, sturdy construction, reliability, and sound that beats out more expensive sets.

The time you take to do research will aid you in your home theater system quest. It may seem like a daunting task at first, but you will be more than happy once you own your system!
