If you camp regularly, you're bound to encounter some rainy days even when you thought the day or week would be perfect. We might not be able to predict the weather perfectly each time but there are some things we can do to at least make it a little bit more bearable.

The most important thing on a rainy day at camp is your tent. You should have a tent that can keep you dry in the worst of weather. Make sure your tent is weatherproof and that it has a ground sheet. This is where most cheap tents fail especially if you don't apply waterproofing.

A vestibule is very useful if you're stuck in the rain for a few days. You can store wet clothing and boots in the vestibule. With proper ventilation you can cook inside the vestibule and make some hot drinks to keep you warm. The food is where your warmth and energy comes from.

Ventilation is important not just because it makes it safer to use camp stoves inside your tent but also to prevent condensation. You'll be surprised how wet you can get just from condensation.

If you're on a campsite, find some place to store your gear. If you have a car, store gear that you won't be using there but be sure you have all the important stuff with you. If possible, your wet gear should be stored outside your sleeping area. Try to keep the sleeping area clean.

You should also choose a tent that you would be comfortable staying in for a few days when you have to. If you have a problem with small spaces, then don't use a bivy sack.

If you are backpacking, it's a good idea to have a tent that you can set up fairly quickly. There may be when you have to race against the coming storm to set up your tent.

When you pitch your tent, make sure it is not on the foot of a hill because water runs down and you can get wet pretty quickly when it rains. Aim for higher ground and if you have to pitch your tent on a slope make sure the door is facing lower ground.

When you're stuck in the rain, you need something to do. This is a good time to read that book you've always wanted to read. You can also play some games like cards, chess and other board games if you have company. If you have a portable dvd player, you can relax and spend hours watching movies.
