These people, having lost so much money from what they had planned to retire on, are now faced with the possibility they may have to continue working for an extended time beyond their planned retirement age. It is a simple financial need that is driving this dynamic because although they may now qualify for retirement age benefits such as Medicare, they may not have sufficient funds to provide for their every day needs for the remainder of their retirement years. People are living longer, and that means retirement funds need to be larger to accommodate living expenses.
Faced with the need to continue working, work at home opportunities suddenly become an interesting option. Flexibility to work when you want to, as much as you want to work, and with the ability to be your own boss instead of being told what to do, working from home may be preferable to continuing to work in an outside, regimented job are all reasons to consider work at home jobs.
The increasing ease with which people are now able to start an at home business or find work from home with an outside company, is now a very real possibility. No longer needing to work full time hours to get health care, and with the very real possibility that the mortgage on the house might already be paid off, people are able to manage with a smaller income. This can mean only needing to work a few hours a day, or a couple of days per week, leaving the rest of the week free to enjoy a semi-retired lifestyle.
What could a semi retired worker do for an at home career? Options might include such things as being an at home call center operator or doing medical transcription if you wanted to work for a larger company.
If you are ready and willing to go into business alone then the options are far greater. This would be an ideal time to turn a hobby into a career, perhaps selling the knitting, woodwork or clothes that you already love to make. There may not be the pressure of needing to make a full time income from your work at home business. This way your work remains enjoyable, and perhaps you won't feel as resentful of the fact that the ailing economy has taken away from you the chance to retire as planned.
We unfortunately cannot change what has happened to our economy, nor can we undo the damage done to so many retirement funds. However, with a little creative thinking we can see to it that work beyond retirement doesn't have to exclusively remain a 9-5 option.
