Home carpets cleaners can come in very handy when you have have unexpected spills or mud or some other substance tracked into the home, but they can be bulky and hard to assemble and to store. Many people that clean their own carpets had rather just go and rent a shampooer for a day or two rather than investing in one of their own. Carpet shampooing must be done carefully and completely in order for the job to be well done and be worth the time and effort you put into it. Often you will need to pretreatment of high traffic and heavily stained areas before you actually shampoo. Sometimes this mean getting on your hands and knees with a scrub brush and stronger cleaner just to get the stains out well enough.
The one mistake that a lot of people make when they shampoo their carpets themselves is over saturating the rugs. It does not require as much water as you might think. When you continue to spray water on, it can be penetrating further down than just the carpet and padding. When it is given enough time, the water will penetrate into the sub-floor underneath the carpet and this can take an extra long time to dry. If you do not suck enough of the water back out, mold could set in before the floor has finished drying out. If it stays so wet, for so long, it can even cause warping and bowing of the sub-floor and damage parts of your floor joists and cause mold to form on those.
Carpet cleaning is a more serious matter than you might think. Anyplace you miss getting out enough water can potentially cause mold and rotting, even in the carpet itself. It damages and breaks down the carpet fibers. If you are not absolutely sure you know how to perform this task as well as it should be done or if you can not take all of the time required to do the job well, hire a professional to come in and do it for you. You want to end up with cleaner looking carpets, but you can definitely do without the water damage.
