It shares its borders with County Durham to the south and Northumberland to the north. It touches the North Sea on its eastern side. Gateshead, Newcastle upon Tyne, Sunderland and South Shields were all assigned as county boroughs under the Local Government Act 1888. In 1904, all these were united by Tynemouth.
