This may sound a little strange, but I am a person that fully supports cosmetic surgery of many kinds. Our culture places so much heavy emphasis on a person's outward appearance that it is difficult to feel confident and beautiful when you are stacked up against an airbrushed magazine model. Am I right?

It is my feeling that once your restructure your lifestyle to ensure that you are healthy and active in every way possible, but it still isn't enough, that you should be able to take advantage of the blessings of the advanced medical technologies we enjoy today.

But when it comes to selecting one of these technologies, it can be difficult to know what's right for you, especially when it comes to something "basic," like liposuction. There are multiple types of surgical liposuction which can have slightly varied results. What's more, there are also other popular alternative procedures that do not involve surgery.

One patented non-invasive version of liposuction involves injecting enzymes into troubling areas which end up breaking down some of the fat deposits, which are passed through the patient's urine. It can be used on virtually any part of the body and can reduce the appearance of cellulite, but is less effective on parts with extensive fatty areas.

Mesotherapy similarly involves injections, but these contain a mixture of amino acids, medication, and holistic compounds to do the work of dissolving fat. The needles used are smaller, and so the treatment is said to be virtually painless.

Another non-surgical procedure literally melts fat away with a laser while simultaneously tightening the skin, so this is most effective in the use of subtle facelifts. Therefore, it is used most on the face and neck areas.

Now, of course, these non-invasive methods are beneficial to those who do not wish to undergo surgery and patients who have more limited concerns.

They are no less important and confidence-building, but more dramatic results are generally achieved through surgical means, which have come a long way in recent years.

A more popular process is called the tumescent liposuction procedure. As the surgery begins, your surgeon will inject into the area of concern a compound of anesthetic and a vasoconstrictor. The anesthetic is usually a substance called lidocaine, which can actually induce an allergic reaction in some patients, so discuss this with your doctor before undergoing surgery.

This injection actually firms the fatty deposits, allowing the surgeon to extract them with ease, making the bleeding much more limited than in now outdated methods.

Of course, there are risks as with any surgery, so if you think this might be right for you, talk it over with your doctor and your surgeon. Together, you can decide the best way to improve your appearance and boost your overall self-confidence.
