If you are one of the 90% of American adults who own a vehicle, you should know the importance of regular vehicle maintenance. Some car owners do a good job of keeping up on their cars maintenance schedules, making the roads they travel on that much safer for themselves and the motorists around them. Still, many others let their cars go too long without checking the tire pressure, fluid levels, and other important features on their cars.

This often results in vehicles more likely to run rough, break down, and cause hazards for other drivers. To all of you who have not been as faithful to your car as you should, the following guide can help you to maintain your vehicle as well as your mechanic maintains his vehicle.

Some parts of your car are meant to last longer than other parts. While oil filters must be changed when you get an oil change, headlamps will last much longer and do not require as much attention. Still, you should replace your headlights once a year. Headlights are not only for your safety but also for the safety of others. Too many pedestrians die each year because drivers headlights are too dim or burned out completely. Another issue involving visibility is poor windshield wipers.

Wipers will not last forever, especially in cold climate states. Replace your wipers in the spring and just before winter. The condition of the interior of a car speaks volumes on how well the car was treated by its last owner. If you plan on selling your car someday, the condition of your car's interior says a lot about you! Several times a year you should give your vehicle an interior makeover. Vacuum your upholstery, wipe down all vinyl and other hard surfaces.

Use air fresheners or scented cleaning agents that leave your car's interior smelling like new. Get into the routine of giving your car this makeover whenever you get your car's oil changed and radiator flushed, which should be every 3 months or three to four thousand miles. It's funny how people call their cars their baby, or their pet. Yet if they went that long without washing or grooming their child or pet they would be considered cruel. Every month your car should have at least one wash.

Washing your car is not just to impress the ladies. It washes away impurities like dust, dirt, and salt residue, which can cause rust. Don't forget to wash the wheels, as tar and brake dust can build up behind the tires making a mess of the hidden car parts.

Once a week attention should be paid to the workhorses of your car, the tires themselves. Check your tires pressure once a week and correct accordingly. Proper tire pressure can prolong tire life, save you money at the pump, and make for a smoother ride.

Finally, avoid harsh driving methods on an everyday basis. Be kind to your car and it will be kind to you.
