Ever heard of Ionic or Colloidal Silver? Most people haven't. Ionic or colloidal silver is a solution of water and ionized silver particles dissolved and suspended in it. Studies have shown that ionic and colloidal silver can have powerful, natural antibacterial qualities, and in some ways, has actually been recognized for thousands of years for its usefulness medicinally. In both America and Europe in the days before antibiotics, silver was the prescription of choice for doctors in treating infection and disease. Research and testing have shown that silver is powerfully effective to battle literally hundreds of different illnesses and ailments. It sounds odd to think that a metal can have such a monumental effect of the body, but when you think about it, metals are integral to our survival. Iron is in our blood, and potassium is used in the nervous system.

Ionic and Colloidal Silver have been demonstrated to kill a wide range of disease-producing organisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, yeast, and the egg-stage of parasites. For this reason, silver can even be a powerful disinfectant and has many potential applications. It can be used to treat special or general conditions and ilnesses, things like the common cold, or moldy carpet. Silver is toxic only to single-celled organisms but does not harm multi-celled organisms, such as the human body. Tests have shown that it works by interfering with the resperation of single celled organisms. It disables the enzyme that's needed for them to metabolize oxygen.

Because of how it works, colloidal silver has the extra benefit that bacteria have a hard time growing resistant to it, unlike what happens with the overuse of antibiotics. Colloidal silver can be made multiple ways, and not all products of silver are exactly the same. Colloidal silver can even be produced at home, with the help of a colloidal silver generator, a process known as electrolysis, that uses an electrical current to strip the silver down and ionize it in water, which I intend to document in a later hub.

There is much speculation over whether silver is intended to be taken as a normal daily dietary supplement. Some concern has come over having too much silver absorbed into a person's body. Research has shown that some medical conditions, primarily argyria, can result through an over consumption of a certain kind of colloidal silver. This too, I intend to document in a later hub. Colloidal silver works best when taken at the onset of an illness, and sources recommend that it is most effective when used at the first indication of symptoms. Colloidal silver should not be considered dangerous or unsafe when used as directed to help fight impending disease, much as one would use an antibiotic.

Archaeological evidence has shown that cultures even in ancient times used silver plates to treat and speed wound healing, and drank from silver cups to prevent beverages from spoiling. Hippocrates himself, the Father of Medicine, noted that Silver promoted the healing of wounds and helped control disease. Some cultures also bathed their newborns in bathwater mixed with powdered silver as protection from the germs they would encounter in the world around them.

Ever heard the expression "Born with a silver spoon in his mouth"? Upper class nobility who could afford such luxuries would feed their children from silver spoons because they knew the silver offered protection from the diseases that ran rampant around them. Also, farmers would routinely throw silver coins into their drinking wells and pails of milk to prevent the contents from becoming foul or spoiling. Silver nitrate drops, for a long time, were put into the eyes of newborn babied to prevent blindness.

Colloidal Silver is a wonderful gift. When used wisely and taken as directed, it can be highly beneficial in contributing toward abundant good health and wellness.
